New UBS boss seeks fresh start after trading scandal

The new interim boss of UBS has been charged with reorganising its investment bank, a task which will take two to three years to complete, its chairperson said on Sunday after CEO Oswald Gruebel quit over the $2.3-billion rogue trading scandal.

The UBS board accepted the resignation of German-born Chief Executive Gruebel (67) on Saturday and appointed as his interim replacement Sergio Ermotti, who hails from Switzerland’s Italian-speaking region of Ticino.

The board is looking at both internal and external candidates to fill the post permanently and Chairperson Kaspar Villiger told a newspaper on Sunday ex-Bundesbank head Axel Weber had already been involved in the CEO selection process as an independent advisor.

But Weber was not due to take over as UBS’s chairperson until 2013, Villiger said.

He also said that Ermotti, the suave former UniCredit banker who joined UBS in April as head of Europe, Middle East and Africa and has worked in London and New York is a strong candidate to remain as CEO, Villiger said.

“He has lots of experience and brings a lot of what’s needed to run the bank. Read all post…

Market snapshot: Pelican Cove in Sarasota

But in the case of Pelican Cove, it is not just hyperbole. The community is hidden, and it is a gem.

Located near Sarasota Square Mall, between Vamo Road and Little Sarasota Bay, Pelican Cove is one of the area’s most attractive and unusual developments.

Pelican Cove has been a “Community of Excellence,” as recognized by the Florida Community and Association Journal, for the past three years, said Connie Lang, the community’s general manager.

The gated, bayfront community sits on 75 lush, forested acres and has 731 condominiums nestled among the woods, well-kept lawns and gardens.

A former owner of the land, May Wilbanks, loved Florida’s abundant vegetation.

Urgent action needed to protect recovery: IMF chief

– The new head of the IMF on Saturday urged global policymakers to pursue urgent action, including forcing European banks to bulk up their capital, to prevent a descent into a renewed world recession.

“Developments this summer have indicated we are in a dangerous new phase,” International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on Saturday at an annual conference hosted by the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank.

“The stakes are clear; we risk seeing the fragile recovery derailed. So we must act now,” she said.

Two years after the end of the worst of the financial crisis, growth in the United States and Europe is sputtering as debt burdens rise.

Bing Local Business Portal Goes Into Maintenance Mode

Good luck trying to add or update a local listing at the Bing Business Portal. It’s not working, and won’t be for another 10 days. As both Daniel Hollerung and David Wallace noticed on Twitter this morning, there’s a new “Scheduled Maintenance Alert” on the dashboard when you login:

It says the maintenance window began back on July 2 and continues through July 18 … that’s a seriously long time. Wow.

The message says that listings added after July 2 won’t be added until about July, but the “Add” button isn’t even working at the moment. If you try to add a new listing, you end up on a blank screen — no forms to complete, etc. On the other hand, the “Add 25+” bulk submit form is still working, it appears. At least, it still exists.<

Yesterday I was working away diligently and got a call. It looked like one of my client’s numbers so I answered. A lady wanted to know if we sold Facebook fans. I asked her if she wanted us to help her grow her page with real people and she said no, that she wanted to know about getting 10,000 likes right away. Sigh. We have clients who have paid some money (eighty-nine bucks) for 1,000 likes. They got about 400 total new likes and honestly, they were not real Facebook people. T
