Asia shares hit 14-month high, ailing dollar rises
TOKYO (Reuters) – Asian shares hit a fresh 14-month high on Friday on optimism over U.S. earnings and the global economy, while the U.S. dollar got a reprieve after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke indicated monetary policy would have to be tightened as a recovery takes hold.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei average rose 0.6 percent (.N225), with resource-related stocks climbing after gold hit a fresh all-time high the previous day. (.T)
“Investors are covering short positions, largely encouraged by a solid performance in overseas markets,” said Masaru Hamasaki, a senior strategist at Toyota Asset Management, referring to worries in recent weeks that a seven-month stock market rally may have got too far ahead of economic fundamentals.
But trade was cautious in Tokyo due to persistent worries about the impact of a strong yen on corporate earnings and as investors were hesitant to actively take positions ahead of a long weekend in Japan, market players said.
The MSCI index of Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) extended the week’s robust gains to hit a 14-month high of 402.01 points. B

Businesses’ dismay at national post strike vote
Business groups have reacted with dismay to a vote by postal workers in favour of further industrial action.
Yesterday, the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) announced that 76% of its 121,000 Royal Mail worker members had voted in favour of a national strike.
The union said that the result was a “huge vote of no-confidence” in Royal Mail management, which it accuses of running down the business in the name of modernisation.
However, Royal Mail issued a statement in which it described the CWU action as “unjustified”, adding that the union was attempting to “undermine” modernisation, and that it had “already agreed all the changes Royal Mail is making”. Read all post…

Australia rate hike, earnings optimism lift Wall Street
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stocks rose on Tuesday amid signs the global economy was recovering and optimism that corporate earnings reports will beat expectations.
Hopes that the global economy was picking up rose after Australia became the first G20 country to raise interest rates since the onset of the financial crisis.
Also, gains in energy and other commodities boosted shares of oil and resource companies as the U.S. dollar fell against a basket of currencies.
Shares of Exxon Mobil Corp (XOM.N) was up 1.2 percent at $68.43 and was among the top gainers on the Dow, while the Standard & Poor’s energy index (.GSPE) added 1.5 percent.
Shares of industrial companies sensitive to the economy’s cycles also rose, including United Technologies Corp (UTX.N), up 1.4 percent at $61.28.
