4WD and a sixth sense: Safety at next level in Grand Cherokee

After driving 400 miles on a crowded interstate highway, I’ve been thinking about changing lanes in an SUV. There’s more to it than you might realize.

Thanks to the amazing array of sensors that are available on a top-of-the-line luxury vehicle, today’s well-heeled driver can discover where his own senses end and danger begins.

Motoring round-trip on Texas’ ever-congested strip of Interstate 35 between Austin and Dallas, I had a chance to discover the capability of the electronics on the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit, a loaded 4×4 that retails for $42,995.

As an all-purpose, go-anywhere, do-anything sport utility, the Grand Cherokee is riding high, with a wealth of awards and a 51 percent sales increase in 2011 nationally and a 226 percent increase in Texas alone.

Merck partners with two drugmakers to gain business in growing Brazilian marketplace

Merck said it will form a new joint venture with two Brazilian drug makers in an effort to gain a toe hold in one of the emerging markets the company is counting on to help grow future profits.

The deal with Supera Farma Laboratorios, which is co-owned by Cristalia and Eurofarma, will distribute and sell a portfolio of Mercks branded and generic products.

This venture is an important step forward in our strategy to grow our business in key markets and improve global access to our medicines and vaccines, said Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier.

The deal gives Whitehouse Station-based Merck additional local expertise, an expanded portfolio of products and a strong distribution network to establish its medicines and make them accessible to patients across Brazil.

The joint venture will have its own sales force separate from Merck, Cristalia and Eurofarma, but will leverage the infrastructure of the parent companies for such things as training.

Through a subsidiary, Merck will own 51 percent of the joint venture.

Citibank says frequent flier miles are taxable

NEW YORK ? Frequent flier miles aren?t so enticing when they?re taxable.

That may be the sentiment among Citibank customers who are receiving 1099 tax forms from the bank to report their frequent flier miles. The forms were sent to customers who were given American Airline miles for opening a checking or savings account last year.

That?s causing confusion ? and possible concern ? among those who never before reported their frequent flier miles and other credit card rewards as income.

Here?s what?s behind the seeming discrepancy:

The Confusion

Credit card rewards ? including frequent flier miles and cash back ? are not taxable because they?re treated as rebates on spending, according to the Tax Institute at H&R Block.

However, a reward given for opening a checking or savings account is not considered a rebate since you don?t spend any money to receive it.

Veterans Administration moving to online claims to speed up delivery of benefits

The only way to achieve Veterans Administration Secretary Eric Shinseki’s goal for 2015 — that every disability compensation claim be processed within 125 days and with 98 percent accuracy — is to shift to a paperless claims system. And that transformation has begun.

That was the testimony Tuesday by VA’s top claim processing official before the House veteran affairs subcommittee on disability assistance.

Tom Murphy, director of compensation service for the Veterans Benefits Administration, an agency within the Department of Veterans Affairs, acknowledged the claims backlog has grown in recent years.

Compensation and benefit claims pending at VA, as of Jan. Read all post…

British Airways renews ‘stiff-upper-lip’ service

British Airways (BA) will reactivate its long-dormant advertising campaign in Thailand in a revived bid to reinforce its brand.

The campaign including a TV commercial incorporating BA’s “To Fly. To Serve” motto, will be launched in the coming months as the airline realigns its fares to be more competitive, with a March introduction tentatively targeted.

Sriram Narayan, BA’s newly appointed manager for Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, yesterday said the goal is to make BA the first choice among Thais travelling between Bangkok and London.

The move comes in the face of even more intense competition in Thailand’s airline industry, particularly from cash-rich Middle East carriers that fiercely pitch themselves against legacy airlines like BA and Thai Airways International on Thailand-Europe routes.

BA along with its partner Qantas of Australia operates twice-daily flights between Bangkok and London, a route that BA has served for 77 years.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had a brand advertising campaign in Thailand.
