WinWeb Pitch of the Week – Hello Baby
WinWeb Pitch of the Week – Hello Baby
The latest winner of our small business Pitch of the Week competition is Trevor Ginn the founder of Hello Baby, an online baby and nursery retailer based in East London. They sell a wide range of baby products such as prams and baby seats at competitive prices via multiple distribution channels including eBay, Amazon and also directly through their own website.
Trevor’s previous job was as an eCommerce consultant, but grew frustrated with seeing his clients doing so well when he knew a lot more about online marketing than they did. Having always wanting to start his own business and already worked for three companies that went bust, he was certain that he could do a better job. In 2007 he finally took the plunge and started his own online business.
Hello Baby has been growing very healthily at a rate of 10% per month despite the recession. They have a monthly turnover of around £25,000 and make a small profit that Trevor expects to grow once volumes increase and he is able to benefit more from economies of scale.
Trevor feels that his expertise in online marketing has been able to make his business stand out from the competition. He knows a lot about Search Engine Optimisation and has been able to use this to attract a lot of online attention without a large marketing budget. His website currently receives about 1,000 unique visitors every day.
If Trevor could change anything about the first few years of running his business, he feels that he made a mistake in not employing staff earlier than he did. Although it was important for him to keep costs low he found it difficult to run the whole business by himself. In five years time, Trevor sees his business as a £5m turnover company. He is currently only thinking about growth and not an exit strategy.
Trevor Ginn was able to take the experience from his professional career and successfully apply it to a completely different area of business. Do you think that you could do the same?
