20 TED Talks for Small Business

TEDis a small non-profit focused on fostering ideas and new information.  The name comes from technology, entertainment and design and early on they brought together leaders and thinkers from those fields to discuss a wide a cross disciplinary issues.

TED immediately was a hit and their annual conference is one of – if not the – top business conference in the country.  In addition to selling out the event live, it is simulcast to multiple locations around the world.

Speaking at TED is now considered a top honor and those that get to do it spend weeks preparing their presentations, which are called TED Talks.  TED talks are limited to 15 minutes, and since speaking at TED is such an honor the speakers are all world leaders in their fields.

TED costs thousands of dollars to attend, but they make the talks available for free on their website. 

Online Universities has assembled 20 TED talks on their blog targeted at small businesses.  Since all TED talks are interesting, so is this list.

Keeping control of finances is critical to the success of any small business. Without tight financial control, any business will soon get into trouble. A sudden dip in cash-flow will leave them unable to pay bills or purchase new stock. This can have disastrous consequences for unprepared businesses.

Good financial management involves a lot of careful budgeting, A budget should be based on projected sales figures to achieve the most accurate results. Budgets allow you to take back control of your spending. If you budget correctly then you will be able to deal with regular commitments like paying salaries and will know how much money is left at the end of the month for you to either invest back into the business or take out.

Another critical element of financial management is monitoring.

Facebook Drops the Hammer on Small Biz Users

Facebook giveth, and now Facebook taketh away. Facebook’s “Pages” — formerly called “Fan Pages” — are the primary way for a small business owner to have a presence on Facebook. And one of the most common marketing tips about Facebook Pages is to create a custom landing tab. But Facebook has pulled that rug out from under small business owners. Custom landing pages are now a no-no.
